Night Wizard conversion

Post by TsukasaGr »

I recently saw the Night Wizard anime, and I am thinking about running a campaign with OVA.

Now, Night Wizard is actually based on a Japanese RPG of the same name (currently in its 2nd edition), but unfortunately no translation is available.

(some info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_Wizard)

I scanned the internet for any possibly helpful info, and I thankfully found, not a lot, but enough to make a campaign.

Some extra help with it would be nice, though. Is there someone around here who has actually read/played the original and could give some help? I know the possibility of someone here who can actually read japanese is low, but I feel I have to ask.

BTW, OVA is the best system I've ever seen, so I would still be running the campaign in OVA even if I could read japanese :P And that is not simple praise. I've played with hundrends (literally) of systems, as I suffer from the same curse as Clay. As a DM I was no better, since I too like to search for the perfect system, so we've tried almost everything available here. OVA happens to be the closest I've seen to a perfect system so far. Simple yet elegant and it MAKES SENSE. So many wonderful and simple ideas in one place. :) So thank you, Clay-san. You must be the most dangerously honest designer I've seen, and I respect you for it. For what it's worth, you have a fan.

Just had to get this out of my system. :)

I know nothing about the game, but a good place to start is probably the anime (if you haven't looked at it already). They should at least have the core concepts that you don't need to slog through pages of text through.

Have you also tried finding Seven Fortress?

A) Drop back 10 and punt
-or-
B) Improvise. You're probably going to know the most about the franchise, so who's going to disprove you? ^_^

From what I've seen, most Japanese "Table-talk" RPGs leave a lot to be desired rules-wise. Much like their console RPG brethren, most Japanese games are still built on the same footprint the original Dungeons and Dragons was many years ago.

But yeah, like others have said, go with your gut. OVA is built for exactly this purpose. You don't need to know what Character A's exact Charisma score is. You simply rank on a logical, finite scale only those abilities that truly matter to that character.

...but thanks for the compliments. I'm really happy you've found so much to enjoy from the game. Perfect...I dunno about that. But here's to trying, eh? :)

Thanks Clay-san! Now if only I could find someone to help me with the 22 classes and the names of the Demon Lords and their moe attributes :P I'll probably use templates or something for the classes...

You are not wrong about the jap. rpgs rules-wise, although there are exeptions, they rarely give much weight to the rules system :(

I'll tell everyone how it worked out! :)
