Question on Companion

Post by Darkeye4876 »

Hello everyone. This may be a newb question and I apologies in advance, but I have recently purchased a copy of OVA and I am eager to start running it for a few of my friends, but I there is one things that has got me stumped and I just can't wrap my head around.

Companions.

According to the rule in the Revised Edition of the book and based off of a few posts I have found. The Companion will have a total of 20 Health & Endurance which I understand, but when it says they will have a total number of Abilities and Weaknesses equal to the level, I am not really sure how that is being calculated.

I look at the few examples of Companions they show under the sample characters and for the life of me I cannot wrap my head around how the abilities equal out to the level of the Companion level of the character.

An example being Karis from the book who has a companion level of 2 for Arasuni her robot friend who seems to have quite a few abilities and weaknesses and I am not whure where the Companion level comes into play.

Maybe I am just not seeing it or there could be another section of the book that explains it in more detail (I have not read the full book as of yet, but I have a majority of the book digested) but any assistance in helping me understand how Companion Abilities are calculated would be a tremendous help.

Thank You in advance.

Companions are built like a normal character, except they have less room for the difference between Abilities and Weaknesses. Usually you have 5 points for the difference using the Base Zero rules, but for Companions the difference is equal to the Companion level.

So, if you have Companion +1, your Companion could have 20 points in Abilities but must have 19, 20, or 21 points of Weaknesses.

If you have Companion +3 and 10 points in Abilities, you can have Weaknesses range from 7 points total to 13 points.

The other difference is that Companions have starting Health and Endurance at 20 points instead of 40 that player characters have.

OK perfect. I was completely lost by the wording they used in the book, but that made more sense.

Thanks for the explanation!

I'm more curious is if one could use Abilities to increase their Companion's base Health and Endurance level or if they're stuck with 'em no matter how much they're stacked.

Other than buffing up with Tough and Vigorous, I would say not. After all, Companions are Secondary characters, so it makes sense they'd have the base 20/20. However, with Tough +5, they'd have 80 Health, which is equal to a Player character who has Tough +4. I don't think that's a huge disparity.
