How exactly does barrier work?

I was wondering how exactly barrier works, The way I read one part makes it seem kinda OP.
Here is part of it. " you may burn endurance to "buy off" Damage on a one-for-one basis. With enough endurance, you can theoretically nullify any attack!" They this sounds makes it kinda OP.
Here is how I think it works.

I roll a 10 you roll a 5 so I have 5 damage you spend 5 end and my attack is stopped.

or does it work like this?

I roll a 10 you roll a 5 so I have 5 damage X2 for my dx so 10 you spend 10 end and my attack is stopped.

The top way seems really op but the bottom way seems like a reskinned defense only weaker due to the fact that someone can use barrier buster on you.

Yes, with enough Endurance you can negate all damage. However, that's also the cost, since Endurance scores are not that high (even at 100, that'd still only give someone an extra three or four turns of fully negating at most).

Since Barrier does not lower DX like Armor does, the Endurance cost would be based off the full damage.

It is an alternate to Defense, so Evasive and Quick would not help your roll.
