spam measures

Post by DreadSpoon »

Looks like spam is getting to be a problem on this forum. Some measures you might consider:
- Require all users with less than X approved posts to be moderated. Can be a turn off to legitimate new players.
- Block all posts that have more than three or four links. Most spam messages are link fests.
- Require some form of verification that the poster (or account creator) is human. captcha's are bad because they discriminate against blind or visually impaired humans. Putting in a simple arithmetic question works very well. I cut spam down to zero (and it has remained at zero for two years) on one forum with such a trick, and never had any complaints from users.

Since I don't code the forum, such creative avenues are not really an option. There actually is image verification activated now, but it has proven to help nothing.

At least they're sticking to General Discussion for now, which doesn't receive much legit traffic anyway.
