The other day, my friend pulled out his forgotten relms books and we rolled up some characters right. Then he expressed some dissatisfaction that made my spine shiver. He read one of his books' recommeded source book lists. THIS THING WAS MASSIVE! It required that the game master had 12 (yes, twelve books and i am not exageratin) other books (each book costs from 30- 40 dollars). Talk about NASTY! Man am i glad i am runnin ova...

Cloud, allow me to introduce you to the exciting world of Corporate Marketing!

Seriously though, that isn’t uncommon for RPG’s to pull the old ‘some assembly required’ trick. (although any company who actually tries this with twelve books… well, they’re pushing it, to say the least)

Let’s see:
Players Guide
GM’s Guide
Spells Book
Monster Manual
World Book (optional)

This is pretty much the end-all list of stuff needed to play D&D way back in the day.

Personally, I stuck with Deadlands, which technically only needed two books, Players Guide and Marshals Handbook to play an enjoyable game.

I do run dungeons and dragons. I can get by using the core 3 books. I just like the concept of a core book being the only required book in the library.

Glad you appreciate it, Cloud. ^_^ Although D&D is fun in its own right (and I balk at the concept of them ever unsplitting the books for nostalgia's sake), I never felt it was fair, or really sensical, to split a rulebook into multiple parts. This includes the "Player/GM" split and the "Here's the magic book, the weapon book, the thief book..." syndromes.

With OVA, I wanted everything to be, basically, possible in the main rulebook. Though genre books will be released, there will be no new rules that would confuse someone who had never seen the book.

I do make an exception for OVA mecha...I thought a tactical game was essential to any Mecha RPG.
