Re: Future Sphere Mechwarrior

Sorry for the delayed reply. I tend to get busy with work and go AWOL from the forums for swaths of time. I'm glad you have Sabersonic to bounce ideas off of! I love the idea of individual quirks defining what makes one pilot's Marauder different from another. This is actually touched on in an old B...

Re: My Dungeons and Dragons Conversion

It would just be a Defense Roll using the "Protect" move described at the end of the Combat chapter.

Also, spoiler tag may be warranted. ;)

Re: Strike Through to hit someone in a Vehicle/mech?

Another way to handle it would be to use the Cancel flaw, eliminating any damage for mecha targets—but of course leaving the squishy pilot vulnerable.

Re: Implementing a Character Levelling System

Something to consider is leaving the character's inborn attributes mostly out of the equation and focus on the "loot," treasures that offer increasing bonuses, abiltiies, etc. without really affecting the character sheet. And since these treasures are doled out by you—it's pretty easy to k...

Re: Future Sphere Mechwarrior

Lots of great ideals! I'm really glad you're enjoying OVA's approach to character (or mecha ) creation, Maverick! I'll always have a soft spot for Battletech. It was one of my earliest tabletop game memories—pouring over readouts and building my own 'mechs. Naming them was the best part. :D Somethin...

Re: My Dungeons and Dragons Conversion

Fascinating stuff, everyone! Thanks to everyone who contributed. I'm sure a lot of people making the jump from games like D&D to OVA will appreciate it. To address something brought up earlier in the thread, I personally think the typical shield would serve as a flat Defense Roll Bonus (ala Evas...

Re: Implementing a Character Levelling System

The way I usually approach leveling in OVA is in a much broader sense. I elaborate on this in my blog post about Sword Art Online (itself an anime about playing a VR massively multiplayer online RPG), but I'll paste it below to save everyone having to hunt for it: Levels Unsurprisingly, level too ca...

Re: Component - a new Ability for complex combatants

As a diehard JRPG fan, I can't express enough how giddy the whole Component idea makes me. Especially with old school RPGs before lots of interesting mechanics were added, multipart boss fights were always the most interesting to me. Do you focus on reducing its power by taking down the extra parts ...

Re: Strike Through to hit someone in a Vehicle/mech?

Short Answer: Yes, Strike Through would allow this. Longer Answer: But that's not to say it's easy. Depending on the size of the vehicle compared to the size of the pilot space, it might be a VERY difficult endeavor to successfully target the pilot area, and this should be accounted for. Likewise, t...

Re: Fusion - an Ability for combining characters

Nice! I really like how the characters' relationship factors into the Fusion. It's not nearly as robustly thought out as what you have here, but for completeness's sake I dug up my thoughts on the matter from an old thread (though it's more Voltron and less Dragonball): I’m pretty sure I’ve touched ...

Re: Mobil Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans

I really need to catch up on my anime watching... In any case, the Vehicle Ability is mainly there to handle game types where characters with and without vehicles mingle. (For instance, in a supers type campaign, it's kind of important that Batman gets called out for his fleet of Bat-Vehicles.) But ...

Re: New GM, Any Common House Rules/Problems?

Hope your game worked out well, Demonskunk! There's no errata so-to-speak, the game is already the refined and perfected version of an old edition from 2005. But if you ever have any problems or questions, please post them here!

Re: Homebrew ideas

My advice on this topic is usually the same: It often works best to rename or modify an existing ability. It provides a framework that you know will play nice with other Abilities.
