Very interesting scenario. I like had you added a story to go along with it. Things Noted from test #1: Combat skill and defense really, really matter. Of course they do, but don't forget that there are other ablities that modify combat: Acrobatics, Agile, Quick. Armor is helpful, so long as the dif...

Technically, there is no rank beyond 5. Rank 5 is extraordinarily rare, a rank reserved for completely awing, supernatural abilities. A little advice... Unless you're running a very powerful game, I wouldn't allow abilities to creep up into rank 5 from Transformation. It's too easy and subject to ab...

Again, my reasoning is that if a hero has both a scaly (or rocky, metallic, spiny, shell-like, etc.) hide and an unnatural resistance, the armor gets hit first. My rule: Barrier, then Armor, then Unnatural Resistance But what if I'm hit by an attack that my hero has an Unnatural Weakness to? Calcula...

This came up early in my game too. The house rule is the Armor subtracts first, because the armor is hit first, then Unnatural Resistance kicks in. It's what I ruled as "layered protection." If there was a Barrier involved, then the barrier gets hit first, then armor, then UR.

Wow! This looked great. It certainly had the feel of a Conan adventure. I might even try it as a one-shot with my group. One question, however: III. Hamlet on the Highway A. In the southern reaches of Zingara a small hamlet is under attack by the cannibalistic ghouls of the fens. B. The villagers ar...

I haven't worried about magic since its presence was very minor in the game session. I haven't had to deal with money yet since it never came up either. The PCs were issued weapons or could have picked them up off of fallen enemies. I was thinking of making money and treasure like an ability- "...

That's great! OVA does lend itself to a lot of genres as long as you're not emotionally attached to "crunch" and a roll and rule for everything. I'm glad it worked out for you. Eliminating the Armor, Weapon and Power Move abilities, and creating a equipment list, was something I did in my ...

Hi Gavinwulf: Welcome to the forums. 1) Strong and Martial Arts add to Power Move damage. 2) I just finished a space fantasy campaign that wasn't so much anime, and it went very well. When running a "more traditional" game in OVA, you have to be aware that the system takes a lot of things ...

Long Overdue Question

I don't know if this has been addressed before, but why does the Wise Turtle hate Palladium so much? Not that I'm a fan of Palladium, but your dislike for them has been stated a few times.

It comes to my attention that OVA does not have a reward system for the players (other then having a good time). What do I do if my players are greed driven? Then they're probably playing the wrong game... However, that doesn't really help you. First I going to assume you mean "treasure" ...

Ironically, I was just having this same discussion over on another board. Whether running for friends or strangers, I use the same simple guidelines. 1) Decide upon a theme, mood, feel, atmosphere for your game. This can be done with or without the players' consensus, but have something definite in ...

Finally, vehicles in general will be getting an overhaul in the revised game. So hopefully it will make playing without the intended mecha supplement more feasible.
That sounds very cool. You know we're all dying for this book to come out?

The first thing you have to understand is that OVA is a powergamer's wet dream. Because of its lax rules on character creation it is very open to abuse. It is this same "rules-lite" approach that gives the game its greatest strength. You can create virtually any character from anime, manga...

Hello all. Just borrowed (alright, outright swiped) a copy of OVA from our group's on-again-off-again GM, and just have to say.... damn. I'm impressed. Seriously impressed. I've been gaming since Chainmail and Gary Gygax was the hot young turk bastardizing wargaming by adding role-playing to it. As...

Plans for OVA mecha are currently on hold as I go through the task of revising the text of the main book. Once I complete that, I will probably create a new thread about mecha playtesting. Thank you everyone for your continued interest in this much-delayed product. So the rumors are true? I know in...
