Re: Tweaking OVA for a more loot-friendly campaign...
I ran the first session (introduction + character creation) of my new OVA game using these tweaks! The character creation tweaks worked really well! Players had fun designing their character's starting gear. Everyone took a different, interesting approach. One guy made a mage with few points' worth ...

Re: Implementing a Character Levelling System
Something to consider is leaving the character's inborn attributes mostly out of the equation and focus on the "loot," treasures that offer increasing bonuses, abiltiies, etc. without really affecting the character sheet. And since these treasures are doled out by you—it's pretty easy to ...

Re: More Robust Spells
Hi I love The Magicians (I have only read the books but I have not read the last one ahhh) and I love OVA so basically right now I'm just kinda like https://78.media.tumblr.com/72c4b1f8592f4539eafabfab3a2b3ac3/tumblr_inline_ml2vlfJBp41qz4rgp.gif Overall it looks pretty good. I wish I had more constr...

Re: Strong OP?
In my many games, I have noticed that strong seems to be way better than attack. Now I know that OVA is not 100% balanced nor is it meant to be but it just seems to make any non-melee character underpowered and terms of raw damage even more so if you allow strong and attack to stack DX. So with thi...

Re: Hand-Drawn Character Sheets
I can't tell you how much I love these sheets! The iconography for everything is brilliant—from the ! TV to the sweatdrop Endurance to the die-shaped Roll. I know this is geared towards your fantasy campaign, but the chubby little stars and hearts make me want to abscond with it for some magical gi...

Re: Hand-Drawn Character Sheets
In the end.... I forgot to label the Abilities/Weaknesses section. ;_; I'll probably just write it on there before I make copies haha. http://images.bluecorvid.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/ovasheet-preview.jpg (Full size.) So... there's a spot for all your combat stats, including initiative roll. ...

Re: Hand-Drawn Character Sheets
I almost forgot -- I messed up the measurements in that first image and made them about a 1/2 inch too short. The final ones are fixed, and the attack spacing is way less wonky.

Hand-Drawn Character Sheets
Happy Inktober! I've been doodling bits and bobs for hand-drawn OVA character sheets for the campaign I'm about to run. I've also been working (for a million years!) on a bestiary of sorts to use in that kind of game. Up until now I've just had them scribbled on 3x5 cards (though I'm slowly transcri...

Re: Tweaking OVA for a more loot-friendly campaign...
The Ammunition Flaw (and the Limited Uses Weakness) can both be recharged -- either under particular circumstances or after a day of rest. This works just fine for bullets (which can be "recharged" at any place where bullets can be bought) or effects that can be used once per day (which ar...

Tweaking OVA for a more loot-friendly campaign...
Link: a sample character, for fun! :D While I have run more roleplay-heavy games, I use OVA a lot to play D&D-style fantasy games. Crawling dungeons, killing monsters, searching for treasure... it's a little tough when equipment isn't really a thing . So here are some tweaks I'm implementing fo...

Re: Fusion - an Ability for combining characters
I definitely had that reply in mind when I came up with this. One of the games I ran had a big group of characters but also sometimes had big space battles. While one or two of the characters had giant mechs or little ships of their own, most of them stayed in the spaceship (a la Eureka 7.) So every...

Re: Component - a new Ability for complex combatants
In the context of OVA, it also lets you buff boss fights without having to resort to inconsequential minions. Dragons don't have sidekicks, so having the dragon form his own sidekicks is very cool. T H I S A million inconsequential minions in every boss fight is definitely a classic anime thing fro...

Re: Implementing a Character Levelling System
I never saw that SAO post! That's a really good one! I feel like that's similar to something that got touched on on the forums before, maybe -- something about how if you wanted to run a grittier campaign, you could do away with the default two dice? I did think about adjusting that according to lev...

Re: Implementing a Character Levelling System
I mean, that's pretty much how it works in other games -- higher levels mean it'll take longer/more EXP to improve -- so I don't see too much of a problem with that. So how should EXP and levelling work, then? I guess the easy way is: Accrue experience points. When you reach X experience, you level ...

Re: Implementing a Character Levelling System
I hope you don't feel I am antagonizing you, since I do appreciate the ideas you are bringing up. Likewise! I know I can be (or come across as, anyway) pretty argumentative. XD Does Tough and Vigorous still come into play? Replacing Tough and Vigorous with your level up idea probably would not be o...
